WATER COFFERDAMS
Sacramento River, California
William Tucker Associates was retained by Shimmick Construction to design cofferdams for two new fish screen structures on the Sacramento River. These projects located near Grimes, and Orland, California are owned by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District respectively.
The projects called for cofferdams in three sizes, 30' x 250', 40' x 300', and 40' x 600', ranging in depth from 20' to 40'. WTA designed the bracing and sheet piles, and coordinated the connection details with existing structures. We also reviewed the de-watering issues and the re-quisite water cutoffs.
WTA has addressed special situations at each site. These include:
•Value engineering for an alternative foundation
•Stability analysis of an existing roadway adjacent to the excavation
•Design of a work trestle that had to support a 200-ton crane.
